Gracie Nicholas's profile

Toni Morrison Book Set

Novelist Toni Morrison (1931–2019) helped carve out a spot for female black writers everywhere. She left an unprecedented legacy of realist work filled with difficult issues and topics that are often censored or ignored today. She shed light on the shadowed and brought light to the hidden.
Taking inspiration from the hand-made qualities of early Jazz posters done by Black artists of the 20th century, I cut out individual letters from fabric. I scanned them in to create the hectic arrangement of disrupted words that form the titles of her books—books that disrupted society to its core.
The colors were chosen to show that the lessons learned within the books are the primary building blocks needed in order to navigate a dark world ruled by privilege. All of these elements added together to create a system that carefully reflected the delicately chaotic subjects of Black life in post-colonial America.
